Millions of people suffer from chronic pain every day, and even more people experience acute pain from time to time. Whether it’s muscle soreness, headaches, cramps or issues with ligaments, cartilage and arthritis - pain is the pits.

Avoiding pain is part of our very human fabric. We’ll do just about anything to sidestep discomfort. Maybe that’s another reason we don’t hit the gym as often as we should or make excuses not to go on adventures that might involve uncomfortable repercussions.

Because as humans we have many vulnerabilities. Eat the wrong thing and you get stomach pain, cramps and bloating. Do too much intense exercise or dance like nobody’s watching and your muscles might ache for days.

Unfortunately we can try and avoid pain until the end of time but it’s not something any of us can run from. Having some strategies to ease pain of all varieties is a better idea than attempting to avoid it altogether.

Essential oils are an awesome alternative to pain medications that have lingering long-term side effects. New research is even surfacing about how pain medications like Tylenol affect our ability to feel empathy. That’s pretty huge, not to mention the negative effects on our livers and the fact that pain medication only ever masks the symptoms, doing nothing to provide long-term relief.

Pain Relief for Digestive Distress and Cramps

Digestive issues are a common occurrence in our society which prizes hot dogs over broccoli. Most people experience digestive discomfort at least a few times a month.

Peppermint oil is the best treatment for gas and bloating. Simply add a few drops to a carrier oil and apply to the abdomen and lower belly in a circular clockwise motion to stimulate movement and help provide soothing relief.

You can also take small amounts of high-quality peppermint oil internally for more severe digestive issues. The University of Maryland recommends taking peppermint oil in an enterically coated capsule so that the capsule can withstand the stomach acid and make its way to the intestines.

Cramps are undoubtedly more common for women and can create a lot of discomfort. Adding EO’s to your PMS tool kit is a choice you won’t regret.

Lavender is great for reducing the associated stress that cramps can bring. The University of Tehran did a study on the effectiveness of using lavender oil for pain relief during menstruation and found that it majorly improved discomfort.

Peppermint or spearmint essential oil added to a bowl of hot water and a touch of carrier oil can be used to soak a washcloth for a hot compress that reduces pain.

Formulas for Muscle and Joint Pain Relief

Muscle and joint pain can linger for weeks. It often stems from overexertion, exercise or even just excess stress and tension. When you’ve got sore muscles it’s hard to just chill out. The discomfort is often frustrating and makes daily life less easy going.

Taking care of muscle and joint pain with essential oils is a heck of a lot healthier than using painkillers, and just as effective. The root cause of all pain is inflammation, and when inflammation becomes chronic, you’re bound to run into all sorts of trouble.

Getting to the root of chronic inflammation is a challenge, and essential oils can be a big help, especially when you’ve made the choice to stop with the painkillers.

There are different combinations of essential oils for different types of pain.

Managing Headaches Naturally

The last type of pain that affects so many people is headaches. There are many different types of headaches, some worse than others. Anyone who’s ever suffered from migraines understands how debilitating they are.

Just like any other type of pain, headaches stem from inflammation and relying on painkillers for relief only leads to higher levels of the very cause of the headaches to begin with.

Peppermint essential oil will be your best friend if you get headaches. It has natural pain relieving properties and also helps to clear congested nasal and sinus pathways. Apply a few drops of peppermint oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil and dab on the temples, neck, shoulders and forehead for instant relief.

Eucalyptus essential oil has a similar effect to peppermint as it works to clear congestion and open up the nasal passage. It’s more effective using steam inhalation. Fill a bucket with hot water and add about 10 drops of eucalyptus oil. Cover your head with a towel over the bucket and inhale deeply for a few minutes.

Lavender essential oil is great for relieving the tension associated with headaches and migraines. Use it in the same way you would peppermint oil or have a hot epsom salts bath with 25 drops of lavender for a stress reducing experience.

I’m not a huge advocate for the miracle cure magic weight loss system that everyone and their dog seems to be selling. Gimmicks and diets might work for a little while, but they aren’t a very sustainable strategy for maintaining a healthy weight. That said, nature has provided us with an abundance of powerful substances that can make losing weight easier and even enjoyable.

Essential oils are a great addition to your weight loss strategy. The chemical structure of certain oils can help with everything from boosting metabolism to increasing energy and dealing with cravings. You know those days when not being able to have a donut throws you into a deep despair and robs you of all momentum, that’s when essential oils come in handy.

Some people swear by taking certain oils internally to help with weight loss. While this is certainly an option, I would recommend ensuring your gut flora is in tip top shape before adding EO’s to the mix.

The nice thing about using essential oils for weight loss is that you can address not just one aspect of long-term weight loss but several. Digestive health, stress, energy levels, cravings, these are all factors in whether you’ll be successful in attaining your weight loss goals. The more value packed members you have on your team, the better.

Kick your Cravings and Boost Metabolism with Grapefruit

Grapefruit is a potent ingredient in any weight loss program. It’s such a popular weight loss food that it’s often made an emblem in many images and recipe programs that promise great results.

Essential oil of grapefruit is jam packed with phytochemicals that can help boost metabolism and reduce cravings. A few drops of grapefruit applied directly to the underside of both feet first thing in the morning is a great way to start the day.

The mere scent of grapefruit is enough to stimulate increased energy, improved focus, and boosted metabolism. When the urge to devour something not-so-healthy comes up, have grapefruit on hand to inhale deeply and you’ll see the craving softly dissipate.

Aid Digestion with Peppermint

Poor digestion is a big old roadblock to weight loss success. Unfortunately, it’s all too common. Digestive ailments affect millions of people each year and that number is growing. Because of the nature of digestive issues they can be extremely debilitating and cause you to easily get off track with your weight loss plan.

Peppermint is perfect for alleviating the pain associated with digestive issues. From cramps to bloating and gas, rubbing a few drops of peppermint mixed with a carrier oil on your abdomen is a great source of relief.

Therapeutic grade peppermint oil can also be taken internally in times of dire need. Only one drop in some water makes a huge difference in taking care of those annoying gas bubbles and belly pains.

If you’re starting a new diet then it’s common to experience changes in your digestion. People who adopt the paleo diet for example, while much healthier for digestion in the long run, often run into major hurdles that might normally hinder them from continuing. Peppermint is a good helper in these cases. Even just taking a few deep inhalations of peppermint can make a big difference in calming nausea, indigestion and stomach aches.

Alkalize and Energize with Lemon

Lemon is the strongest member of the citrus family. It’s naturally occurring compounds fight high levels of acidity, boost the immune system and stimulate energy and focus. Lemon essential oil can be combined with grapefruit for even greater benefits.

Diffusing lemon essential oil into the air not only helps to purify but also provide a gentle energy boost. Apply a few dabs to the wrists and temples for a pick-me-up or help with craving suppression.

Nip Stress in the Lavender Bud

Stress is the reason most people put on weight and the reason most can’t get it off. When your body’s in stress mode it’s hard to accomplish much else. Everything suffers, your digestion, your self-control, and motivation, it all feels the effects of chronic stress.

Getting rid of stress is an important element of a holistic weight loss strategy. Using lavender as part of a stress reduction strategy is so helpful. Lavender helps to calm and relax the nervous system in a gentle way. Any time that you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious as few huffs and lavender will help you to rebalance.

Stimulate and Motivate with Lemongrass

Ah lemongrass, it contains the same name as lemon while providing a completely different experience. Lemongrass is refreshing and invigorating. It's uses for weight loss are more so for its ability to help increase energy and provide a resource for refreshing the mind.

The mind is likely the biggest obstacle when it comes to achieving your weight loss goals. Keeping a high vibration and a high level of motivation is of paramount importance. The best way to do this is to keep tools like lemongrass and the other essential oils handy to offer a refresh in times of need.

Cravings factor into the mental aspect too. There’s nothing worse than feeling hungry and deprived on a diet. Which is why hardcore diets are rarely sustainable. A better long-term strategy is to just eat real food. Ditch the processed sugar and junk. This stuff is addicting so it won’t happen overnight but the oils can help. Every time you get a craving bust out the grapefruit or lemongrass and take some deep inhalations of those aromas. The compounds in both of these substances will help to invigorate and strengthen your resolve to only nourish your body with the best foods possible.
